So, I was going to write a post about Day 2 of Book Expo America, but it’s so long ago now that I can barely remember it. Here were a couple highlights:

My wife, Elizabeth, joined me, which was great fun because she hasn’t really gotten an opportunity to be a part of this “book thing” all that much. And, as we were running around with romance writer Jordan Summers, she also got to meet…

Melissa Marr, who we basically hung out with all day and late into the evening. They seemed to get along really well and kept going off together, leaving me alone holding their drinks at the HarperCollins cocktail party.

So… it was great fun and I’m looking forward to seeing Melissa again at Conestoga, along with a bunch of other cool writers.

Moving on…

The cover of NIGHTMARE ACADEMY 2: MONSTER MADNESS is starting to pop up online, so I thought I would officially unveil it here:

As always, you can click on it to see a larger version. It is due to be in stores August 26th, I think, along with a reissue of Book 1, which has new cover art, a new subtitle, and a bunch of cool extras in the back. Here it is:

Harper also put together a press thing to kind of show off the books as a series and it’s very cool. You might need to click on it a couple times if you want to see it really big:

You can see in the press thing that they’re being released in what’s called a “Paper-Over-Board” format, which is basically just a hardcover book without a book jacket. It’s the same style as the LEMONY SNICKET and SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES and DIARY OF A WIMPY KID books. I haven’t seen a finished version of the new books, but I love the POB style and, actually, argued for it in the initial release of Book 1.

So… that’s the news on that. I’ve also decided to do a series of blog posts talking about the different movies and TV shows I’ve either written or re-written. People often ask me about them and I figured I should write down some making-of experiences before I forget them all. So, if all goes according to plan, I’m going to be doing separate posts on the writing and making of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 9: JASON GOES TO HELL, MY BOYFRIEND’S BACK, MAJOR PAYNE, MY WIFE AND KIDS, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT along with other movies that I worked on but did not take credit on, like HAPPY GILMORE and GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE and NOTHING TO LOSE.

When will I get to all this? Not sure exactly. I’m frantically trying to finish my revision of NA book 3 before I go off on a very unexpected adventure to London, Spain and Paris for a week and a half. Consequently, it may be a few weeks before I start those blog posts, but I’m planning to take plenty of pictures on this European trip, so I’ll put up a few of those.

Take care…

Awww, Dean, I still like you too, but Elizabeth was just too cool to NOT wander off with . . . I’m seriously hoping we can connect next month when I’m in SoCal. I’d love to introduce the boys too.
When do you leave for Europe? Before or after Conestoga?

I leave for Europe on July 10th and I’m back on the 18th, with Conestoga coming right after. And I would LOVE to get the boys together next month when you’re in SoCal. We’ll figure something out. :)

        RE: Europe
*sigh* I’ve only been back a week, & I’m already pouty over missing Scotland.
        RE: SoCal
We have a class at one of the museums the week of Aug 18 (M-F). Maybe we could connect midway at the Cube Sci Ctr in Santa Ana . . . We were just at Disney in March, & I hate going there in the summer. I’m not sure what else is midway.

I am REALLY looking forward to this trip to Europe. I’ve never been to Paris or Spain. In Paris, I’m going to meet my French editor for a drink at some little cafe — which just sounds so… lovely and European. And I’m planning on going to the Louvre, which should be fun.
In Spain, I hesitate to even say what I’m going to do because it’s so cool. I’m traveling with my friends Don Reo and Damon Wayans. I’ve known Damon for forever. I met him when I wrote MAJOR PAYNE. And Don Reo was the showrunner of MY WIFE AND KIDS. Anyway, long story short, Don became friends with Clarence Clemons — the sax player from the E-Street band. We even had Clarence on the show once. So, it turns out that Springsteen and the band are playing a date in San Sebastian, Spain and we’ve been invited to see it as their guests.
As for meeting up in SoCal, we can certainly meet up at the Cube science center or we can come down closer to you, if you like. The San Diego Wild Animal park is pretty cool. Unlike a regular zoo, there aren’t really cages. The animals roam across a big sort of savannah and you travel through it. Doesn’t really matter to me, though. We’ll figure something out. :)

Well the only names I recognize there are Springsteen & Clemons, but I do recall you mentioning an invention w moving pictures so I’ll just repeat that remark in my mind as if u were here saying for the 27th time 😉
Very cool re: concert & re: editor & re: Louvre
            RE: SD Wild Animal
Animal geek that I am, I actually renewed my membership to the park even though I live on the wrong side of the country right now. We love the Wild Animal Park. I’m not digging the fact that the renovations made it so easy to get out to Kilima (sp) Point . . . I liked it before when it was a long assed hike. That meant that we’d get it to ourselves. Still, very very impressed w the lion exhibit. We were there opening week for that one. *sigh* Yeah, that would be great if you wanna come down there or even down to Solana Beach or to Balboa Park. Those spots are where we’ll be pretty much nonstop that week :)

    Yay for unexpected adventures!
    The new covers look great.

Thanks so much. The first cover always looks strange to me because I’m so used to seeing the original one , but the two new covers look kind of cool together, with their “doors and monsters” theme. We were just talking about the cover for book 3… what new door, what new monster.

The covers are fantastic. Very nice.
I’m going to Conestoga too. Will you have copies of your book to sell and sign there, or should I pick a book up before hand and bring it with me.
The Borders near my house are completely out of your book. If you won’t have any with you, I’ll probably just order one.
I’m looking forward to meeting you, Dean. I love your website (not going to marry it, of course).
That Melissa… I’ve heard ‘things’ about her. Can’t wait to meet her too. She always has such nice stuff to say about you. Wonder why?

Thanks for the kind words about the covers. I won’t actually be bringing books to Conestoga. Unfortunately, the new books come out about three weeks after the convention and won’t be available at that time, but I’d love to meet you and sign any books you might have brought, after you throw a tantrum at your local Borders. :)
And, about “that Melissa” — she’s a keeper.

I wouldn’t call my reaction at Borders a tantrum, per se… but the security guard who hauled my A$$ out wasn’t exactly happy with me. Nor the lady who fingerprinted me, either.
        It’ll be a good time. I can’t wait… just 3 weeks!
I’ll order books and bring just in case.

*hijacks the thread for a moment*
The booksellers at the con should have copies of all of our books for sale (those already released). This means that Dean’s re-release won’t be there, but the first book (with the original cover) should be there on sale.
Last year, the vendors sold out of some books pretty early on, so my rec is that when it open, one should go to the Dealers Room (where they sell books, tees, & assorted odd things–like stuffed Cthulhu backpacks and the vicious rabbit from Monty Python). This is a way to assure that you get a fair shake at getting the books you want to get signed while there.
There’s also a chain bookstore that’s fairly close, iirc. J & I found it last yr when we were in search of tea . . . If you make a “wrong” turn, there’s also a cute little piercing studio. They had a surprisingly good selection of body jewelry. I tried to explain to J that this is PROOF that “getting lost” is not a bad thing. Lost=opportunities to say, “ooh, look what we found!”
[Please disregard any of her comments on “getting lost” in Baltimore should the subject arise. The neighborhood wasn’t nearly as bad as she thinks it was, esp at that hour.]

Okay, well that explains a lot, even to me. I’m glad to hear that the original hardcover for Book 1 will be available at the convention. Thanks for clarifying, Melissa.
I just wish you could drop by more often and explain everything in my life so neatly and cleanly… :)

        Hi Melissa,
Thanks for all the info. I’ll be sure to ask J about Baltimore.
I can’t wait to hang with all you guys… if you’ll have me.

Ah! See, I was really confused when I went to B&N today to order my copy and noticed that it looked drastically different from my copy of book one. But I dig it. Can’t wait! 😀

To be honest, the ordering is all screwed up online right now. You can order Book 2 through B&N, but the description of the book is currently wrong — it’s rejected copy from Book 1. Also, the excerpt is from Book 1. Amazon doesn’t even list Book 2 yet and I think the same is true of Borders. It’s a mistake that HarperCollins is in the process of fixing. Hopefully, things will get sorted out soon and things will be less confusing…

And that’s what I said to the guy at customer service! “Hey, that’s kinda weird. That’s the description for book one, yet it clearly states it’s book two! *shrug* Order it anyway!”

I just went to Amazon and see that they’ve now taken down the listing for book 1 (no idea why) and put up a new listing for book 2 — but they’ve used the book 1 description and “search inside” feature and all that. It’s a little frustrating. Thanks for hanging in there. :)

First time we met, I believe you were just finishing “Nothing to Lose”. And “They” for little Opie Cunningham. Will you also be journaling about bigger events? Like that night I slept on the bathroom floor?

I’m glad you reminded me of “They”. I’m planning to do a post or two about unmade scripts and that’s a good one to talk about. It’s a science fiction comedy I wrote for Ron Howard and it has been in development for forever. I’m guessing at LEAST ten writers have taken a crack at it.
And, as for the night you slept on my bathroom floor, I’m not sure it needs its own journal entry. I TRIED to move you to the couch and even succeeded once, but you crawled back to the floor claiming it was “nice and cold”. If I ever blog about it, I’ll call the entry: NICE AND COLD.
